As the parent of four or five girls from pre-school to elementary (that’s an estimate) you might think I have a boss complex. Anyone with that many kids knows whose boss. Usually, it’s not the parent. So, I’ve been looking around for part-time works. As a boss.
Thank you, Apple, for making me Siri’s boss. Here’s how I did it.
The problem started with iPhone 6 Plus; Apple’s first large smartphone. That size is somewhat quaint compared to today’s iPhone 11 models, but all of these gargantuan models have one thing in common.
They don’t work well with one hand; certainly not like iPhone 5 or iPhone SE of yesteryear, and not even well with Apple’s handy half-screen mode which, with a simple tap and slide, brings the top half of an app’s screen down to the middle, and closer to being a one-handed affair.
Closer. Not close enough.
I learned to be my iPhone’s boss by being Siri’s boss. I tell Siri what to do and it’s easy. Almost.
Open Settings on your iPhone. Then tap Accessibility. Scroll down to Voice Control and turn it on. There are some settings to walk through, but in the end, you become Siri’s boss.
Instead of Siri telling you the weather or the latest sports score, or maybe how traffic is to work, you get to tell Siri what to do. The list of commands is extensive and covers System Commands And Navigation, including Open (app’s name), Go Back, Go To Sleep, even Open Control Center.
Wait. There’s more.
Siri also works with What’s On Screen, which means Show Grid, Show Names, Tap (number) or Tap (name) and even Long Press (name), but also swipes– Swipe Left, Swipe Up, etc.
See? You’re Siri’s new boss.
Of course, you can Dictate and Edit Text, Interact with your iPhone with commands that do not require a Siri Shortcut– Turn Up Volum, Lock Screen, Take Screenshot, even Open Apple Pay.
If you feel the world is bossing you around, and you want to get back in control, Siri is a good place to start. Not only that, you can enable such control on iPhone, iPad, and, yes, the Mac (only on macOS Catalina).
Who’s the boss? You da boss.
